Maintaining Your Lawn Mower Wheels
If your lawn mower has a lot of use, you should begin to notice some wobble in the front wheels. For your wheels to move smoothly over you’re the lawn, they must be kept in good condition. If the lawn mower wheelsare loose and worn, it can lead to unneeded energy consumption, gas, electric and human, making the mower increasingly difficult to push and steer. Just like other routine lawn mower maintenance, you can not over look the wheels.
Luckily, wheel maintenance is not a difficult task. Most lawn mower wheels and wheel bolts can be found at most hardware stores. If the bolts are frozen and won’t come off, use WD-40 or Liquid Wrench as an aid to loosen the bolts, then use one or two wrenches to remove completely. Many tires are fastened with a slot and key, so it’s simply a matter of removing the key from the slot, and WD40 may also help you there, too.
Once you remove the tire from the hub, be sure to clean it thoroughly to remove any grass, dirt and debris that may have built up and will prevent the tire from moving freely. In some instances, you may find that you only need to add a couple metal washers to the axle to correct the wobble in the tires. Otherwise, simply place the new lawn mower wheels onto the hub and fasten in place. Be sure to test the wheels to be sure the mower will move easily in the lawn and can turn freely without wobbling.
Since the change in your lawn mower wheelsis gradual, you generally won’t notice any problems until it is too late. But if you spend a couple of minutes every month inspecting your mower and doing routine maintenance, you can prevent any major problems from occurring to your lawn mower wheels.
